Hillary Scott never expected to have twins. The lead singer of Grammy award-winning country band Lady Antebellum gave birth to Betsy Mack and Emory JoAnn in January after a long season of grief. 

Birth is always extraordinary, but for Hillary and her husband (Lady Antebellum drummer Chris Tyrrell) it was especially miraculous. She had experienced a miscarriage in 2015 which caused her to question the goodness of God. 

“Someone asked me recently, ‘Did you question your faith?’ and I never questioned my belief in God,” she told The Boot magazine. 

“I questioned his plan—understanding why that had to happen. But I will honestly say, I was angry; I didn’t understand.”

Courageously, Hillary decided to share her struggle with the rest of the world. The journey of her failed pregnancy coincided with the production of her family’s first gospel album Love Remains, and she was led to include the song ‘Thy Will’ as the lead single which honestly lays out her wrestle with God.

 “I may never understand, that my broken heart is a part of your plan,” she sings. “When I try to pray, all I’ve got is hurt and these four words: Thy will be done.”

God never causes us pain but promises to use it for good, and that is what Hillary and her family have found as Love Remains also pays tribute to her late grandfather. 

The Scott family’s decision to express their grief opened the door for others to find healing, and this included asking the tough questions and being honest about Hillary’s doubts. 

“I knew I would never be the same. I wanted to be transparent and I wanted to give a lot of people the opportunity to stand up and go, ‘That was me, too’,” she said to The Boot. 

With four-year-old daughter Eisele Kaye, the family of three knew lots of changes would come with the introduction of Betsy and Emory. One of them is learning to tell the girls apart—something that Hillary said a “literal prayer” about in the hopes that the identical twins would have slightly different characteristics. 

Thankfully, they do. And now she and Scott want to raise them to embrace their individuality.

Bringing them home was bittersweet after the loss of their second child, but the miracle of the twins is not lost on them. 

“It was emotional [bringing the girls home], because I’m like, ‘Oh, we’re going to have as many babies in our house as I hoped we would have,’” she told People magazine. “It just isn’t in the same timing that I thought it was going to be, but we are going to have our three. It was just one of those things… They’re meant to be here.” 

Together, they decided that Chris would step aside as Lady Antebellum’s drummer to help raise their children. This allows them to fully enjoy the girls’ early years, while also balancing their careers—and Hillary’s new mission to help others through grief. 

“If I can encourage someone else in their own daily life to be brave enough to share their story and share that they’re hurting and give them a voice, that is a whole other part of why I’m here,” she said to the website, LifeZett.

Considering Lady Antebellum are going on tour in July, there is no doubt Hillary will deliver more faith-filled songs in the future—something that will come with even more love now she has received her ‘double blessing’ in Betsy and Emory.
