[REVIEW] Never Forget by Clare Hallifax and Simon O'Carrigan
It’s not easy to talk to children about death, legacy and loss, but in this new children’s book we are given the means to share the story of Anzac Day.
Based on the fictional story of three brothers, simple poetry carries us through Never Forget, which identifies what it means to serve your country, lose people you love, and yearn for home.
Simon O’Carrigan has expertly crafted illustrations to accompany the story, basing each picture on images curated from war museums and commissioned war artists. This creates an even greater sense of pensiveness and grief for the reader but masterfully articulates the emptiness and tragedy of war.
Young children will struggle to comprehend the images and poetry in this book, but as they grow this is an ample portal to Australian history. A sad, but important picture book.
Never Forget is available at major bookstores.
